Despite having taught both the theoretical and practical arts for many years, my first love is drawing and painting. I am a founder member of the Leamington Society of Artists (now known as the Association of Midland Artists) and have a long connection with the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists (and am currently the Chair).

My main career has been in school teaching, having gained the Art Teaching Diploma at Birmingham University, and subsequently a B'Ed(Hons) at Warwick I have held teaching posts both in Coventry and Kenilworth where, until the mid 1990's, I was Head of Art at Kenilworth School. Prior to this, encouraged by the talent of my Head of Department at my first teaching post, I was inspired to produce my first solo Exhibition in February 1966 at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, the first of many such shows. The fluidity of line, colour, shape and texture has always been my primary focus. On giving up school teaching, finding myself with more time to devote to my painting, I honed my skills in watercolour and acrylic with still life, interiors and landscapes featuring regularly. Gradually, I have moved away from figurative and literal subjects towards abstract works where colour and texture are the key elements.

More recently, I have been working on a series of abstract paintings where the interplay of flowing lines and carefully modulated colour have played significant roles in creating movement and perpetual depth. The key to this is the rediscovery of one of my sketchbooks from more than thirty years ago in which there were some pencil drawings consisting of complex patterns of line and shape. It was only after this interlude, with the personal and artistic growth that came with it, that I recognised their potential as a source for further development. Working intuitively in my response to these designs, I found that through the process of painting, further layers of meaning found their way into my work.

In 1995, I decided to leave my career in teaching to develop my commercial ambitions. Following a short period exhibiting my work in Balsall Common as a solo artist, I established a business partnership with Marie Lines and relocated to the Bank Galleries in Kenilworth in 1997. Here I was able to properly realise my ambition to accomodate both exhibiting artists and encourage the talent in others by providing personal tuition though art classes.  As a result of continued success and the need for ever increasing amounts of exhibition space, we are now located at 16 The High Street which comprises 3 adjoining galleries. As befitting a mature working studio, we are now afforded much greater flexibility of exhibtion dates, combined with enhanced accomodation for our regular Art Competitions and personally tutored Art Classes. Full details of all art classes, competitions, exhibitions, and events can be found on our website at: www.jpartstudio.co.uk

Marie and I very much look forward to meeting you there.
