As a photographer and artist I have always been interested in photographs in particular, even before I picked up a camera in anger. They are windows of times gone by, portals which stimulate the mind and for me there is nothing more evocative than a still of a captured circumstance. They exist to be interpreted, cherished, to shock, record and review time and again. This is my medium, my art. I began with a mid-ranged DSLR and photoshop and I now I find it impossible to venture anywhere without a camera or review any situation in terms less than through a lens. My current inspiration is to capture daily occurrences (nothing contrived yet, studio or otherwise) and like a scientist in a laboratory, I experiment with my images in photoshop . Every now and then a piece of work emerges. I work predominantly in colour having forayed into the world of black and white. I have a particular interest in monochrome images and the dramatic contrasting effects that can be produced. For me this is a speciality, a rough precious stone of a process to be shaped and formed. It is easy to produce a black and white image but in my view it is one of the most difficult processes to achieve a gratifying finish to a piece of work. Bill Brandt’s work is quite inspirational to me; his moody landscapes and scenes of social deprivation and later his portraits and nudes are filled with impact and it is difficult to avert your gaze from such images. My girlfriend handed me a Kodak Brownie No.2 not so long ago and I was eager to explore how I could use this fantastic old camera using 120 film. I was unable to produce anything to the level of Bill Brandt of course but using the Brownie helped me understand the basic functions of camera work.
