After gaining a BA from Birmingham College of art I worked in book illustration and much later turned to painting. I use acrylics which allow me to glaze many times to produce intense and intimate portraits of my favourite domestic objects and fruit. The painters I respond to most, such as Vermeer, Chardin, Fantin-Latour and Hopper, all make work which has a self-contained and introspective stillness. Ordinary objects can become extra-ordinary by the transforming effect of light. That transformation is what I try to capture.
