My work explores the need to communicate.   I aim to express a state of being; a moment captured; a visceral feeling.   Making the unknown accessible; the physical, emotional and mental spaces we inhabit.

Working mainly in oils and acrylics, I work intuitively and autonomously.   I respond to the materials and my state of consciousness.   The subject is revealed, hidden, ambiguous.   I aim both for the seductive and complex that bears evidence of the struggle in expression.   The work becomes an emotional arena, a surface with hints of space beyond.

My practice was initially influenced by Franz Klein and his fellow American Abstract Expressionists for their powerful brushwork, and subsequently by  Gerhardt Richter, Howard Hogkins, Hughie O’Donoghue and Cy Twombly.  Bridget Riley offers sound advice for any contemporary artist whilst artists like Bill Viola, who use time-based media with its’ relationship to painting, have highlighted  the importance of duration and contemplation in my work.
