“The impact of the paint on the surface of the canvas is an act of communication with wider implications than the initial process suggests. In the viewer the image created might evoke an emotional or intellectual response, or suggest connections which may not initially be apparent in the work itself. I am exploring the sublime ‘as a means of expressing (by analogy) what would otherwise be strictly inexpressible’.
Through the use of a contemporary medium – gloss paint with its limited range of non-organic colours and its plastic qualities – the challenge has been to exploit its non-aesthetic qualities in an aesthetic manner.”
